Some fanart thoughts
Okay, so I've been wasting all my time over at
fanfic_hate lately, and I finally go around to this thread in which some author is bashed for bad fics, and then for her fanart.
The fanart, in my opinion, is ugly. It's a lot of yaoi with guys that have huge, lipstick covered lips and otherwise awkward facial features. But what really bothers me is while I can see how some people would like that style, some of the pictures got me thinking. So here are those thoughts.
Obviously people place more pressure of being "in characater" on fanfiction, because that's part of what fanfiction is--if the characters are all OOC it might as well be original writing and most people can admit yes, staying IC is good.
But what about fanart? People draw outside a source's canon style all the time and it's considered fine. You can draw your favorite characters in anything you feel like, and sometimes the artists themselves do that anyway (like the Saiyuki creator's obsession with drawing her ancient Chinese characters in modern clothes). So as long as fanart is technically good, does that mean it's free of the scrutiny fanfiction suffers under?
The reason I started wondering was because of some of the work by the artist in the thread above. Even if the work could be construed as good technically, there's a lot of hardcore yaoi, with threesomes and bondage and gang bangs and electrodes...things I would never imagine the characters involved to ever employ in their sex lives (POOR SQUALL!!). I know some are commissions done for fanfics but...when is Quatre in a thong EVER in character? Does it even matter?
It just surprises me when people praise art like that all over the place, when my first thought was, "Would Squall ever allow an electric traffic cone up his ass? Regardless of how good he looked doing it?"
Or is that just beside the point? ^^;;
