Countdown Post - Turnabout Big Top
This is one of those cases I'm rather biased on, but I'll try not to be B:
The reason being, of course, that I play Acro over at
gyakusai_rp. I did near the end of our first run as well, but it didn't last for very long, and I'm so glad to be able to pick him up again.
BUT ANYWAY
Most people can't stand this case, and I don't blame them. I always play it with the sound turned down and blast through day one as fast as I can. It's kind of annoying to move around the circus, and there are quite a few fetch-quest things that bog it down. And Moe's puns are painful in more ways than one :(
But I think the case improves a lot on replay, and the second day especially really picks up. The Producer describes this case as one of her favorites because of the way it exposes a darkness beneath what you think should be a magical place, and I think you can really see that when Moe starts to break down and reveal the truth bit by bit. The first time I played the case (two years ago now?) I remember going into court the second day, and feeling somewhat stunned with Moe calmly said, "You mean Acro?" By then I was fairly sure he was guilty anyway, but hearing it from Moe was kind of a shock. At that point I really came to appreciate Moe as a character, and by extension the rest of the case.
Now I know I was just complaining the other day about murderers and their motives, but 2-3 is really at the top when it comes to "very unusual reasons to want to kill someone." Here is a man who knows what he's doing is wrong, knows it was an accident and no one is really to blame, but simply can't let it go. It's hard to imagine what must have been going through his mind: a once popular and successful acrobat losing his legs, trapped in a room he barely leaves...and tended to daily by the girl responsible, who has no comprehension of just what has happened because of her. Bound to screw a person up, for sure.
It puts the player in a strange spot, because even though you kind of want to feel sorry for Acro because of all he's been through, you can't really, because what he did was just so plainly wrong. It's a bizarre tragedy and a lot of people don't like it because of that. But I really appreciate the extra flavor it gives the series, and it provides a great setup for 2-4, the pinacle of "What does it mean to be a lawyer?"
Plus...I just really like fucked up characters, and Acro fits that very very well <3
Speaking of which, next is 2-4! I'm looking forward to replaying, because even though I refer to it as my favorite case often, it's been a while since I was able to actually sit down with it. Should be fun :D
