So the first book I worked on is now in print!

Slayers Premium!!

I bought a copy myself yesterday. They changed bits and pieces of the dialogue from what I'd had, but nothing much more than I expected (if you happen to read, know that choice phrases such as "wee barancle" and "blonde bruiser" were not by me ^^). But that's their job as much as it's my job to translate, so I'm pretty glad with how it came out overall. My name is even in the book! Very exciting.

While there, I was also fortunate enough to find an imported volume one of Death Note, which I bought (Imports at Borders? Very strange).

It's pretty bizarre. In fact, it reminds me of Gantz a little in as much as your everyday high school student is forced into odd situation involving death to many people ^^;;. The premise is that the main character, Yagami Raito (has anyone seen merchandise for this? Is it romanized as "Light"?) gets hold of a book belonging to a very scary looking Shinigami. If you write someone's name in the book, they die soon afterwards, with various stipulations as to how, why, how much time, etc etc.

So the kid starts using it, which eventually attracts the attention of Interpol, and world-renowned super detective L (who goes barefoot a lot, and therefore, I like him and his silly haircut).

It's an interesting premise, and the art is good, but there's something about it right now that irks me a little, and that's the main character, Raito (or his alias, Killer). I'd like to think that most high school students, given the chance to kill indiscriminately, would not go ahead and do it. His motives aren't all that bad but he falls into his roll so easily it's almost as if he's been brewing sociopathy all his life or something *_*. So far there hasn't been any insight as to why that might be, or even that I should be expecting to find any.

That, and the fact that the kid's a super genuis or something (one of the smartest kids in the country, from the sound of it). Honor student or no, some of the things he comes up with to test his "Death Note" are very elaborate and, near the end of book 1, pretty contrived. There are so many conditions that effect the Death Note and he uses them so effortlessly that it feels less like a kid trying out his new tool and more like the author showing off his cleverness.

And as the people who know me might know...there's not much that irks me more than someone forcing their mad innovation skillz down my throat... >.>

Anyway, it's interesting, and come Acen I plan to pick up the next few to see where it goes. If nothing else, I'd like to see a full picture of L's face. Right now he kind of looks like Gantz's Inaba. (But barefoot)
