Apparently there's some wanking going on in
ouranhostclub. Of course, I'm in
ouran_host which doesn't get wank at all :(
I was going to post in it, but then I realized I'm not a member and it'd probably be pointless. So I'll post my thoughts here.
The basis of the wank is that FRoP puts out shitty quality speed-subs. The OP points this out with notations, and says s/he thinks it's "unacceptable." People call her out as being an entitlement whore and things go from there.
I find it unacceptable. I was shocked by the number of people saying, "I don't really care if the quality is bad." I think one person even said, "It's not like they made Hunny a girl." And, since it's a free service, you're not allowed to complain about it ever, right?
Is fandom really so desperate to see and have everything they can that they don't even care if it's accurate?
I translate professionally (as most of you already know) and I've proofread translations by other professionals. When there's an error in translation, most of the time it's honest mistake. When someone translates "I think Hunny's cuter than his brother" I can see how they made the mistake and thought it was "I wonder if Hunny will look like his brother eventually." It's clearly wrong but I can see how someone could mishear. Japanese is tricky, after all.
However, when someone translates "you shouldn't call your brother an alien" as "so they have to fight whenever they see each other" clearly this is not a simple error of translation. Someone had no idea what the line was and filled it in with something else entirely. Someone didn't even TRY to know what the correct line was. And they did this several times.
Hunny didn't ask his father if he could train alone, he asked what was the point of fighting to obtain pure strength. Hunny was made to promise that he never use his full fighting strength because he'd probably level Japan (lol). These are not difficult lines, but they were wrong or missing entirely in FRoP's translation. And replaced with something entirely different.
I've seen too many tweeny translators spreading their "translations" around the net to have any sympathy for people putting out what they KNOW is incorrect. On the Gantz forum all the time someone would post a "translation" they did, and it would end up being so wrong that people on the forum got entirely the wrong idea because of it. People who don't know Japanese have to trust translators to give them the real deal, and when you willingly put out garbage you made up because you couldn't be bothered to check a dictionary, you're being dishonest.
And no, I don't think FRoP puts out speedy, crappy subs for love of the show. I think they do it to get the props from fans. Because God knows if their subs came out AFTER Lunar and Solar, no one would watch theirs.
It's like if I posted on Court Records false information: like if I said that in Suekane's interview she called Edgeworth a drunk, when the truth is she only said that she can imagine him liking whiskey. It's like Roni in the Guilty Gear fandom intimating to people that Daisuke's concept art depicts Sol and Ky as gay (omg did I just go there? :O).
Maybe I'm just annoyed because I work really hard to give people proper information in the fandoms I'm in. Translation is hard work it's irritating to see others be praised for a chop-job. Pazu can back me up on this! I know she worked hard on her PW translations, even on the stupid little details like Lotta's made up words. We googled the crap out of at least one line of hers.
THAT'S what people do "for love of the original." Not slap a bunch of sentences together just so they can be FIRST.
RARRRRRRRRRR
Okay I'm done.
(btw I'm not saying fan translations should be perfect, I'm just saying...put some effort into it, seriously. If you don't know a line ask someone. Look it up. And when someone calls you out for being wrong the proper response is "sorry", not "go away, I didn't make you read it.")
