Ok so I'm playing Disgaea.
My brother got it for me for Xmas (DS version) and I was really glad, because people have been telling me for ages that as a fan of FFT I should play it. Graphics aside it's actually a lot more like Fire Emblem and Kartia as far as I've seen, but really any RPG with sprites is going to capture my attention for at least a while.
Ok yes, 30 hours is more than "a while." How many chapters does this game have??
Anyway I'm about 9 chapters in and I'm still not entirely sure what to make of it. I knew going in that it was a lot more light-hearted than the usual RPG I play, but I keep getting the feeling that the game thinks it's funnier than I think it is. It kind of reminds me of watching an old 90s anime with every cute cliche joke from back in the day (though I guess that's how old the game is anyway...!?). Laharl's kinda funny but I can't really get into any of the other characters. And they keep hinting that there's going to be a plot in there somewhere, but so far all I've seen is side quests with a sprinkle of characterization now and then. When does the plot show up??
Gameplay wise, it's not so bad. The Geo-square thingies remind me of the Laws in the Tactics Advance games where they are alternately totally pointless or endlessly frustrating. It's weird that some of the special attacks have such specific target areas but at least they keep things interesting. But in general the game is so grindtastic it's a little tiresome sometimes. Right at the start of the game it gives you like 20 different little gameplay things to do, but then immediately tells you "You're not strong enough to do this now." I still can't win senate votes even when I'm able to bribe everyone to "strongly for" and "total support" (the only way to get them to pass it seems is to convince the strongest senator in the room and "feed" everyone else to them by force) and Etna's been saving Mana the whole game and still can't make even a 'tard dragon.
Everything about the game is saying "That'll come up later." I guess it's just a grindy game but without the story providing much motivation I'm relying on the cuteness of the Prinnies to drive me onwards. The Prinnies are very cute, dood. <3
Yet somehow I'm still compelled to play the game so I guess I'm enjoying it despite all that B:
Goodbye hours of my life~
