GOTCHABEJECTIONIT!!

This post is only for the super geeks among the Ace Attorney fans that watch my journal. My new job is so monotonous that it allows me a lot of time to ponder and get inspiration for projects I probably will never complete. For the past two weeks this crap has been running around my brain and I know it won't go anywhere until I write it out, so here I go. Feel free to scroll past the impending tl;dr
The longer it takes Capcom to give us some kind of information on GS5, the more Apollo fans like me worry that they're considering abandoning the little guy in favor of safer territory. Wooster pointed out to me the last time we chatted that Capcom is still using Phoenix in his blue suit to market the series, and so far they haven't committed to AJ coming to Wiiware with the rest of the games either. Kenji isn't old enough yet that it makes sense for them to start pushing GS5, but inquiring minds want to know: what if they bow to the loudest opinion in fandom, that Phoenix should come back as the lead? What if the poor sales of Odoroki Gyakuten and other merchandise convinces them people want the old era back, even though sales of the Edgeworth game (a bonanza of fan service) still haven't caught up to what GS4 sold within a couple months?
What will us poor Apollo fans do if Capcom decides to sweep him aside before he has his chance to blossom into a beautiful, passionate flower burning red!?
Make fangames, that's what >8O
So while I was stamping red stars on white frisbees I told myself, "If Capcom announces GS5 is going to star anyone but Apollo, I'm making him a GS5 and 6. Better yet, I'm getting Court Records to help me." And thus my insanity began.
Under the tentative name of "Project: Do Apollo Justice" (lol get it!?) I started taking notes on progression of Phoenix's trilogy: cast size, number of returning vs new characters in JFA and T&T, repeated themes and such. And I created a plan of attack! And then I started taking notes on new characters! And case ideas!! And now I'm going to type them!!!
(And I'm doing it here instead of on CR because I'm not 100% committed to making a fangame yet, and won't be until 1) I can afford a computer that can actually run the current collection of casemakers and 2) Capcom says "We're not doing Apollo" because I don't want to get people excited about a project only to have it all be retconned before it's done by the sudden appearance of AJ2. Because if they do announce AJ2 I'll just have to make a goddamn dating sim instead, grr!!)
Anyway, in looking back at AJ there were a lot of questions left open: When will Apollo and Trucy learn their heritage? What happened to Apollo's dad? How did Lamiroir end up in Borginia, and who shot her? What's Phoenix going to do now? Where is everyone else? The mystery surrounding Apollo's history is especially curious. Already his family tree is semi-fucked: He has a biological mother and father, a half sister, Shadi is sort of his step dad...? And does that make Phoenix his dad-by-association too? And if Lamiroir has kind of adopted Machi, does that make Machi his kind-of-brother?
That is a lot of extended family already, but I think we can do more. My ultimate goal is, I believe, to give Apollo not just a family tree, but a family FOREST.
I'm also interested in giving more connection to the first game by tying together all the smuggler-related topics from the various cases. It always seemed very convenient that the first case occurred in a criminal hideout (specifically used by black market thugs), while in the second Daryan tries to smuggle in foreign items, and in the fourth we meet the poison that is a result of those items. If Kristoph got his hands on Atroquinine does that mean someone had to smuggle in a Borginian Cocoon for him to make it? And if Kristoph has a connection to smugglers, might he have more connections? It seems plausible that there is a larger organization at work, something tying together the Gavins, the Gramaryes, and even the Mishams.
Those of us that have played/spoiled ourselves to AAI know there's a convenient answer woven in the Ace Attorney canon already. Without spoiling all of that here, let's just say there could very easily be a prominent criminal organization hiding in the wings of Apollo's world. Such a group, specializing in smuggling and international crimes, would provide a nice backbone to the criminal element of the first game (and others) without directly connecting everything too neatly.
So let's say there is such a group. Let's say that Kristoph was not a part of it, but had ties to it, enough that he didn't have too much trouble acquiring that $100,000 and bottle of poison. Let's say that group had something to do with getting Thalassa shot and shipped to another country, and then lifted into a position to get things smuggled for said group. But let's not say they "killed" Apollo's dad--let's leave that for Magnifi, because I have a strong suspicion that he was just the right kind of asshole to kill his daughter's husband in order to frighten her back into the family business.
Let's also say that Vera's near-kidnapping as a child has something to do with all that, but I haven't figured out how yet.
So those are the broad ideas I have behind a possible GS5 and 6--connecting the trilogy under the banner of a final villain who, even if he didn't do everything direct or indirectly, had subtle influences along the way. ("he" could also be a "she")
On to the case specifics ideas I had. These are all very general and likely to change but it's just for fun at this point.
Um...spoilers I guess? Can you spoil something that might not get made!?
GS5 Case 1 - Turnabout Cosplay
As much as I hate to admit it, the AJ trilogy needs a little Fey insertion along the way--so why not get it out of the way as soon as possible! Maya and Pearl are in town for some kind of Steel Samurai convention/anniversary/whatevs and Maya ends up witness to a murder. That way she's involved, but rather than be the client, Apollo cross examines her and ends up accusing her (and gets beaten up by Pearl). And Phoenix just laughs. Payne as prosecutor as always.
GS5 Case 2 - Now You See It, Now You Turnabout!
(i r good at naming)
Trucy makes someone disappear during her magic act, but they come back dead! Or else, come back with blood on their hands an suspicion of murder, whichever. I refuse to have Apollo defend Trucy, but there are possibilities for angst. May or may not involve Wocky, Stickler, or Vera?
This is where we'd first meet our new prosecutor. Right now I've named her Miranda (pun on "miranda rights" forthcoming), a woman in her forties who is a divorcee with a teenaged son/daughter. Someone precise and to the point, cynical, and cutthroat. She makes Apollo wish he had Klavier back, lol. She also comes with an assistant/investigator of her own who ruffles Ema's feathers in some way, making her more inclined to help Apollo.
GS5 Case 3 - Turnabout Blah Blah Whatever
Also known as "let's finally meet the rest of the Gavinners!" A year after the Gavinner's split up, I'd like to say the remaining three members quit their law enforcement jobs and tried to make their own band with a new lead vocalist, using "lawmen gone bad!" as the theme. They enjoyed success from emo kids for a while but are now waning in popularity when a murder happens (maybe on a tour bus? A hotel? Not at another concert). Klavier would be involved somehow (let's see his tell!). We'd also get to meet Miranda's ex, band manager Kelly Blind (a man - play on "color blind" lol). So named just so the dying victim can say, "The witness was...blind!" LOL Turnabout Serenade reference. He dresses in black and white (no that's not what being color blind means, pffft) and gets to wear a cute hat of some kind. Cue Miranda characterization (not yet firmly settled).
GS5 Case 4 - Turnabout Whoa Cliffhanger
Yeah dunno about this one yet. Playing around with the idea that Phoenix spends his time through game 5 as a PI, and while staking out a target witnesses the crime. Cross examining him would be the ultimate challenge (possibly best saved for finale of game 6?). Possibly have Klavier come back to prosecute for a day, or else pull a Karma. Kelly will be back and in a bigger role, and seeing under his hat will leave some questions for the next game. He disappears at the end of the game and Apollo learns from Miranda that he might have been married to someone else before her... ho ho ho I think you see where I'm going.
Ummmm maybe involve Thalassa in here somewhere? Still don't know when's the best time for Apollo and Trucy to find out about her and each other. Should happen in 5 because another whole game of teasing the truth away from them could get old really fast. But I'd rather wait for GS6 for Machi to show up; two years is enough for him to have gone through a growth spurt and have him look 16 (with a better outfit).
Which brings us to...!
GS6 Case 1 - Turnabout Kristoph Is Boss
Flashback case playing as Kristoph with Apollo as assistant. Client is an OC I made years ago, Tokiori (never got around to giving him an English name). He's a lawyer from New York and a pathalogical liar. During the case he gives up a list of his clients, and at the end of the case it's revealed Apollo was dreaming/reminiscing, and now remembers seeing Kelly Blind on that list. And there's something about him he just can't ignore!
GS6 Case 2 - Turnabout Big Apple
Apollo and Trucy go to New York! Either by themselves or with another returning character (maybe Vera going to visit her mother? Her mother is still alive as far as we know--could be an opportunity to get into that backstory). They try to hunt down Tokiori and, of course, get wrapped up in a murder. Bring in the Jersey Judge! Miranda's private detective assistant is back, this time working for New York Prosecutor Thomas Bickery, who at the moment I'm basing off the concept art of Apollo pre-GS4 (the one in the yellow suit). My idea for Bickery is that he's the "uber-Apollo" - super loud, super passionate, super impulsive, which ultimately forces Apollo into the more mature role. I like the idea of, by the end of the game, Apollo taking on a sort of mentor-type role with someone to truly push that "from rookie to master" transformation across the three games.
Why Bickery you ask!? Because he likes to bicker and because it sounds like "Bikkuri" ("surprise") which matches so well with "Odoroki!" Possible nicknames include Tom Foolery and Tom Bitchery. His shtick is he wears a blue tooth at all times, and frequently ducks beneath the Prosecutor Bench to speak with someone on the other end. At least once (possibly twice) during every case that he's involved in, Apollo gets to snatch the device away and finds someone else on the other end every time. At least one of those times will be Miranda, advising him to give up. Bickery's other endearing character traits include emulating other prosecutors, including a variation on the Godot-Coffee-Grab, while copying to some degree Phoenix's old style of "bluff your ass off and pray it works." Way back when Anders and I would talk about proscutor ideas, he always said he'd like to see a prosecutor that happens on the right answers like Phoenix does, taking cases in completely bizarre directions. And I like that. Bickery also has a habit of trying to object during the witness testimony.
Graphic flashes, green "Testimony" flashes up, but before the witness finishes, OBJECCCCCTIOOOOOOON!!!!!
It's funny in my head :<
Victim is literally killed by a big apple--parade float maybe.
We also get an Edgeworth cameo! I want Apollo to be able to meet Edgeworth at a point where Phoenix is nowhere to be seen, so they can develop some kind of working relationship as free from his influence as possible. We learn that Edgeworth has been traveling the country, helping courts impliment the jurist system and checking up on them as to their effectiveness. Apollo tells him about trying to track down Kelly, and maybe they bond a little over their "orphaned" upbringing or something. Edgeworth agrees to help.
Later in the game Edgeworth gets back to Apollo and lets him know that Kelly Blind is actually an alias for a member of a criminal organization, possibly a splinter group from a syndicate Edgeworth himself had contact with.
GS6 Case 3 - Turnabout Bickery Gets Fired From New York And Crashes LA
Title says it all.
GS6 Case 4 - Turnabout Let's Get Important Info From Hannibal Gavin
I like the idea of Apollo having to go to Kristoph one last time and break those locks for good. We find out Gavin Sr. was totes bad.
GS6 Case 5 - Turnabout Booble
There are two victims, but one of them clings to life! After the first day the victim wakes up from a coma or something and gives testimony that completely changes what everyone thought they knew about the case. At the end of the first day or beginning of the second Bickery ends up a suspect. Save your fellow passion-heart, Apollo!!!! And find your daddy!!!!!!
And that's about all I got at the moment. I want it to turn out that Apollo's dad, after being almost killed as punishment for meddling in the Gramarye family, went back to Magnifi to try and get revenge. But by then Thalassa had been involved in her accident and shipped off, part of a debt that Magnifi owed his criminal cohorts. So he went after her, joining either the group or their rivals, to try and track her down and get her back. But by then she'd lost her memory! Poor Daddy Justice, what to do!? Have a stint with Miranda mabye!? And then maybe he made a deal with Interpol or the CIA or something and is a hidden mole in the group, because I don't want him to ultimately be bad, because that is just so sad for Apollo.
But it also means that his dad was married for a short time to Miranda, which makes her his ex-step-mom and her kid his step-sibling-for-not-long-at-all lol. Their family reunions are going to be the weirdest.
Oh and the mysterious private detective man/woman turns out to be BAD. Maybe s/he has a PI-off with Phoenix in 6. Whatever that would entail.
Also, Apollo is gonna punch someone, seriously. Toss in Gumshoe as chief of police somewhere and you got yourself a game amirite!?
Okay that is a lot of stuff that may never go anywhere. But I really like the idea of Bickery if nothing else, especially ducking behind the prosecutor bench to whisper into his blue tooth. Cute little Bikkuri-kun~ Apollo needs someone he can give some guidance to, that would be so adorable. And then if Miranda's kid turns out to be a daugher, he can hit on her (unsuccessfully). Or if it's a son, whichever!
And I'm spent.
If you read all of that...you are truly bold. Thank you <3 It may be that Capcom announces AJ2 and I say "Phew, go ahead guys!" and all this goes to waste, but it feels really good to have written it down. If only I could channel those hours of work daydreaming into something truly constructive...!!
Comments welcomed~
