croik: (TELL ME ABOUT THE RABBITS)

This is going to be a weird post 'cause there's too different things on my mind, and I haven't been able to update for a while, so I'll just put both of them here :P.

First, I'd like to tell a little story. A semi adult story about a manga. It pisses me off so be warned, it might piss you off, too.

Imagine a man and a woman. They meet for the first time at a hospital: the girl is sweet and kind and the man, though stubborn and more than a little spoiled, hard working and well meaning. They meet again a while later and go out for dinner. Deciding that he really likes this girl, the man drugs her wine, takes her to his place, and rapes her. While she screams for him to stop he tells her, "It's because I love you."

Woman does not report rape. She goes back to her life and when she meets the man again, by accident, agrees to go with him back to his place, and they have sex. She rationalizes it as, "he said he loved me." They become a couple.

Some time later, man suspects woman is cheating on him. He rapes her again, until she's bleeding. Then, upon realizing that he was wrong--she was only out shopping with a friend--he apologizes. She forgives him, and together they tend to her bleeding wounds.

Does anyone here find this romantic?

Were it well done, maybe it could be a study of victim and abuser. Someone desperate enough to be loved that they'll take any kind of abuse to be told those three little words. But "romantic"...?

Now replace the woman with a man. Say it was a full grown man who was drugged, raped more than once, and bullied into a relationship with a younger, hot headed guy. Is THIS romantic? Is it somehow more acceptable than the woman? Would you write in to the author begging for her to continue like an FF.net reviewer?

Is "I love this man I just met so much that I'm going to drug and rape him against his will" really what passes for acceptable romance among teenagers these days!?

WHAT THE FUCK

And damnit, I know a teenager who's going to buy this book when it's out and think it's adorable.

Maeda Sakae, if you want empirical experience in your topic, seek Kizuna's Kodaka. I'm sure she'll strap it on for you. And then pretend she's still a virgin.

*is not at all bitter*

GAH! All right, now that that's out of my system, on to a completely different topic.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends (PS2). Obviously it's a video game and so the historical accuracy is lacking, but it's really rekindled my love of Japanese history. I even looked up the little samurai figure my host dad gave me when I was in Japan (Maeda Toshiie, general of Oda Nobunaga). And it's got me thinking.

When you say "fantasy," it seems that most people first think of a European model: knights, wizards, elves, unicorns, etc etc. Especially with LOTR and HP still so fresh. But there's a lot more mythology in the world than just what started in Europe. Do Americans not write about African or Asian mythology just because they're not as familiar with it as European? Are elves just that much easier to write about than Tengu?

I'd like to read some Japanese style fantasy. Samurai and onmyouji instead of knights and wizards. Shoguns instead of kings. I'm sure there's plenty of it in Japan but I wouldn't know where to look, and Samurai talk is harder to translate than modern Japanese. There's always anime, I guess, but even a lot of anime turns to Western fantasy models. I haven't seen any Sengoku period anime for a long time, let alone any that was good.

I want Oni and long necked women and Samurai with swords as big as their hoses! Old school warring samurai, not just pretty Shinsengumi or ninjas who wear orange.

Does anyone know if there are American writers who write this kind of stuff? Translated works, maybe? Would you read it, if you found some? I know a lot of people on my Flist are into Japanese anime and games. Am I the only one interested in this era, this kind of fantasy? And no one mention Inuyasha.

Okay, I'm done for now. It's good to be back! *cling*
