So Friday night was the big Harry Potter day. I promise I won't post any spoilers here, I know there are still people getting through the book. I haven't actually read it, but I've been following the fandom wank. Boy is it glorious XD
Friday night my brother, sister and I headed out to Barnes and Nobles to help out an employee friend. We got there by 7 pm and the line was already around the building just to get in. There were supposed to be all sorts of cute crafts and events but the whole thing was a disorganized MESS. There was supposed to be face painting, amulet crafting, wand making, construction of magical creatures, and a quick draw wand duel contest. What there ended up being was straw wands, pipe cleaner animals, and a very hastily prepared and organized "who can yell STUPIFY faster" tournament. Which was fun for the kids.
At around 9 the store reached its maximum fire marshall approved capacity, and they had to stop people from coming in. They had announcements going on of "If you leave, we're letting in someone else, so you're not coming back!!" The younger kids started thinning out (my brother and I overheard a few "I want to stay until 12!!!" "Well you're not, we'll pick it up tomorrow at Wal-Mart" conversations).
The fun didn't really start until after 10, when the cosplay chicks showed up. >:D
Some girl in a green dress, black veil, and long blonde wig showed up with what I supposed was a Tonks, back at the Amulet Station (where my brother and I ended up). There we were able to overhear all manner of delightful speculation, including that the book would only end well if Harry and Draco ran off together. When complimented on her wig, the first girl (who we learned was none other than Mrs. Malfoy, of course) said something close to: "Thanks - I do this for a living." Cue awkward conversation of Lady Malfoy trying to explain "cosplay" to clueless adults.
Though I think my favorite was her going on about how, having just turned 18, she's read the books just about at the same age Harry has been for each one, and thus has "taken the journey with him." Never mind that the books never came out one year at a time. SHE IS EMOTIONALLY INVESTED.
She and her friends then wandered off to the Wand Stand, where my sister overheard their thrilling birth control dilemma.
Unfortunately, that was the extent of the nutters we got at our HP party. There was near chaos when it finally hit 12 and the boxes started open, which TK did an excellent job of quelling through her superior line organization skills (our mother's side of the family has a long history of event coordination abilities). But we didn't have any spoilers running around, any super drama. Just a loooooong night. We got home around 1:30 and went right to bed.
The next day we went out and saw the HP movie (it was an HP bonanza!). I actually liked the movie better than most of the others--certainly better than the fourth, which was rubbish. But this was was actually better than I expected. Except that Dumbledore is an incurable asshat.
And I laughed at Harry's ending speech, because...I think world domination IS something worth fighting for. Seriously. :D
But I have one more thing for you guys! In the midst of skimming the HP wank, I came across...this. This monstrosity. This brilliantly deviant and disgusting offering:
A Snape/Hermione Fan Made Music video.
It doesn't use any footage from the 5th movie, if you're worried about spoilers. Other than that, you HAVE to watch it. It's so horrifically pedo in the worst way (short of...being actual pedo, since it's all just movie footage). And yet, as a video maker, I'm totally beyond amused and even begrudgingly impressed by how...convincing it is. I was laughing myself silly watching it. It's horrific, and it had me in stiches. If you're avoiding spoilers but still want some HP hiliarity, I highly recommend it.
