As much as I enjoyed playing PW for the first time, I don't think it was until 1-4 that I was really convinced of how great it was. I love 1-4 <333

This feels so much more like a real case than 1-2 and 1-3. There's still not THAT much evidence going into the first day, but it's still more than in 1-3, and it's so much more meaningful when Phoenix is all fired up. Other than the slight nonsense near the end with the examination of the parrot, I like that the case is based a bit more on evidence than those before it. Relatively, at least. Mostly.

Though at the same time, this case marks the end of a few things for me as well. A few "goodbyes" if you will :D

1) Goodbye to Maya being an interesting character!

I don't hate Maya. But Maya's slight angst in 1-4 is probably the one and only time I liked her. For a while, she had real character--she reacted to something happening in the case in a reasonable and very human manner. And I was like, "Aww...yeah, I can see how she would feel bad about not contributing and do the best she can." I even respected her a bit more when she said she was going to go back to Kurain to train.

But then comes JFA...and she's no longer interesting. :\ And then comes T&T, and I get sick of her. And yes, I'll say it: I'm glad Maya isn't in AJ. She would have been a waste in AJ. If she's only ever referenced vaguely for the rest of the series, I'll still be satisfied.

2) Goodbye to new and interesting prosecutors! (Until AJ, anyway. And not including Edgeworth's several returns)

I really like Karma. Fighting against him felt epic, like you had to struggle for every inch. It was frustrating in an exciting way. He's a great villain, and despite being somewhat petty he's also really intimidating. And his objection is terrifying.

But after him we get Franziska, who I'm not much of a fan of. And after that we get Godot, who I am REALLY not a fan of. Especially in replaying the case, I like Karma more than ever.

Meanwhile, some other thoughts that have nothing to do with Goodbyes:

Edgeworth. Now, Edgeworth has a reputation for being terribly emo, but to be honest, I didn't think anything he went through in 1-4 totally qualifies. I've always believed that being sad or depressed just isn't enough to be emo: it should be an unwarrented kind of depresssion, like above and beyond what the circumstances allow for. But when you're on trial for a murder you didn't commit, preparing yourself to confess to the murder of your father that has haunted you all your life while you suffered under the tutelage of an obsessed perfectionsist madman... I'm not sure any amount of wangst is unwarrented. B:

It's the claiming suicide and fleeing the country AFTERWARDS that's emo :D

Anyway, I still don't see Edgeworth as being quite as socially stunted as he's often portrayed in the fandom. Sure he's kind of unpleasant and refuses Phoenix at first, but it's nothing that can't be blamed on his situation. I've seen some people make remarks about how Edgeworth doesn't know how to deal with people, especially Maya. But Edgeworth doesn't have any trouble talking and responding to her during the investigation. It's only when Edgeworth has to deal with things like "grattitude" and "concern" that he gets awkward. And why wouldn't he? How do you tell someone "thanks for saving my life!" when you're not used to being nice to people at all?

In any case, I love Edgeworth and especially seeing his vulnerable side, but I like him in JFA even more. Even if 1-4 Edgey gets more play in the fandom.

Also, I don't like Lotta. She's just kind of...there. All stereotype without any twist to make her interesting. A red-headed Osakan with a temper? SHOCKING!

On the other hand, Gumshoe is love. <3

And back to Phoenix... a little less shockingly immoral behavior from him (except for breaking into Yanni's safe. That was definately something he should have taken straight to Gumshoe). But he is dumb enough to show Karma the evidence that proves him guilty. Gahhhhh Phoenix...! Sometimes it's amazing he even SURVIVES long enough to be a hobo.
