I DEFEATED YIAZMAT!!!
We were all level 79 and it took 32 stages, but I beat him at last...! I can't say for sure how long I spent fighting him, but when I booted up my save file for the first time in over a year I was at 180 hours, and I ended at 192. That includes the time I spent leaving Ridorana to replenish my items and hunting around Nabudis for the ether-seller, and even a trip to the Henne Mines, so not all of those twelve hours were spent in battle, but damn. This is where I hear my brother's voice saying "Sarah, you gotta get out more."
Which is a CSI quote, and that's why he's calling me Sarah and not by my actual name.
The start of the fight wasn't so bad. I had a fairly standard Gambit setup with Vaan handling the Masamune and Genji Glove, keeping him Braved and Berserked and such. The first few bars were the most exciting because there was less dying and I could see his life bar depeting with each of Vaan's combos. I really wanted Vaan to carry the fight being THE PROTAGONIST and everything but once Yiazmat got down to 4 bars things really started getting hairy, so I handed the Masamune over to Basch.
At 3 bars I was at a standstill. I could manage to keep everyone alive but they weren't getting any attacks in. I caved and rearranged my Gambits to how the strategy book described, making Basch the head with Lure and Reverse, but it just wasn't working. Between the Rake and Death Strike attacks (both instant KO) I couldn't keep the the support guys alive long enough to cast all the spells on Basch.
I tried putting my support guys on the stairs so that Cyclone and Death Strike were the only things that could hit them, but by then Yazzy was chaining his stupid KOs so that didn't work. I tried facing him head on with everyone set to Reverse themselves but by then he was getting combos of 5 or 6 at a time (each one with a chance of instant kill) so that didn't help either. I even tried Petrifying Vaan outside the arena and rushing in with Zodiark but I forgot I had Fran set up with a Gold Needle Gambit, so she cured him before I finished the summons and poor Zodiark never got to do his attack XD;;
So in the end I said fuck it to the guides and tried a very simple setup with no Decoys and no Reverse and not even anything to cure Sap (seriously, fuck Sap) and just spammed the crap out of Curaja and Arise. Slow going but at least I was able to damage him continuously that way. It was either Basch or Vaan that got the killing stroke, which I thought appropriate.
THUS, VICTORY.
Montblanc's family was really cute! But then I read that in order to make use of the badges I won I'd have to finish the fishing game, and...yeah, fuck that. I'm starting over!!
Being a long time since I'd played, the fight also taught me a few things about my party that must have developed in my absense:
-Basch refuses to be support. When Vaan was in charge with the Masamune Basch continuously ran right up to Yiazmat's nose even though he knew very well his Gambits wouldn't let him attack until after Vaan was protected and angry. He also has the worst luck with Insta-kill out of them all.
-Penelo does not like being away from Balthier. When they were my support team on the stairs I tried to keep one in each corner so I could easily see which of them was about to get murdered, but she always crept over to him, very slowly. Something is going on there.
-Ashe will not allow Balthier to borrow her MP, ever. Everyone else has no trouble Syphoning from her, but Balthier? Nevah. I suspect she wasn't happy about him flirting with Penelo (you know, during the times they were alive and not KABLAMMO'D)
-Fran wielding an axe is not very effective but she sure looks hot doing it.
-Yiazmat hates Vaan and the feeling is very very mutual.
-I swear more at video games than at any other activity I do. Not really a new development. Yes I count as a member of the party.
And that's it~
Now that I'm a member of the Order of Ambrosia it's time to start all over again! Yayyyyyy!!!
