I enjoy .hack. A year ago, I also enjoyed .hack/sign. Though I don't play online games (the idea of monthly fees for a game when I usually only play sporadically isn't my thing) I loved the concept for both the anime and the game, as well as their characters.

.hack/sign was really good, for the most part--I loved Tsukas and Bear and Sora and Krim, and...even Mimiru, at times. BT occasionally. But I hated Subaru! What an annoying little princess. I feel bad for her, in that she felt like she didn't have any power over her real life and had to make up for that lacking through a video game, but...gah. She's a weak person who jumps into a game and tries to manage it when she can't handle her own problems anyway, telling people how to play the game, etc. And even when Krim offers her help, telling her "You can call me if you need to talk," she's just like, "No~ I wanna angst!"

And then she gets her hands on poor Tsukasa. Tsukasa, who has had Bear and Mimiru doing their damnedest to help him, to look out for him and improve his situation and be his friend...but the moment Subaru shows up, for no reason they're like, soulmates or something. Everything that Mimiru did for him suddenly means nothing! After all she went through to help him, he bonds immediately to Subaru the instant they meet. And from then on "Tsukasa trusts no one more than Subaru." Plea~se. Their friendship was totally contrived. Why didn't Mimiru meet him outside the hospital? Why didn't Bear!?

So, Tsukasa good. Subaru bad.

.hack, on the other hand, I haven't been able to complain about. I love all the different characters, and even if the graphics aren't the best and the game play can be...a little repetitive, I still like it.

I like Kite. He's adorable! He's such a wonderful main character, so sweet and innocent but so determined! What a cutie. And Balmung is great, too, even if he needs a little attitude adjustment. Blackrose is okay, but I wish she wasn't quite so Mimiru. My favorite side characters are Gardenia, Marlo, and Moonstone.

I'd like to see .hack as a real fantasy world. Because as fun as it is having layered characters (a game character, but then a real person behind it) it can be a little frustrating when you find out who the person really is. Like finding out Mistral is really a housewife *_* . I hope Moonstone never tells me how old he really is, because he's probably some 12 year old kid acting cool on the internet, but I like his character as the older, silent fighter dude.

Like with Kite. Though in the game Kite's PC looks like, maybe a 15 year old beginning fighter, we know he's actually only 11-12, which is far too young for me to slash *lol*. It might be fun to have a .hack RP, assuming the characters really were their PCs. That way Balmung really is a legendary hero, rather than some pretentious online gamer, and Helba's a super sorcerer rather than the fat old German hacker I'm sure she actually is. (That's not in the game, I made it up, but it makes me giggle)

So yes, those are my thoughts on .hack. Now I need two more H Virus Cores...
